Choi Xoo-ang

Three sculptors are depicted in a pose, creating something while their bones and muscles are fully exposed, without skin. This is The Sculptors (2021) by sculptor Choi Xooang, who has long presented hyper-realistic human figure sculptures. After undergoing surgery on both arms in 2018, Choi Xooang had a two-year hiatus, during which she was presented with the opportunity to break free from the anatomical knowledge, the foundational framework she had considered her "bible" as a sculptor. Perhaps, before the head, it was when her habitual hands stopped moving that she began to meta-cognize the act of sculpture and her identity as a sculptor. As she revisited the ecorché models she had once studied for reference in human figure sculpture, she subtly twisted the muscles that seemed perfectly aligned, revealing gaps through which new possibilities for thought emerge. What kind of sculpture will now fill the empty workspaces between these sculptors?
