Hae-sun Jwa

On an hungry night, there is a woman peering into the refrigerator. It's uncertain if she can't find anything to eat, or if she's just gazing blankly. The only thing dividing the brightness and darkness is the light from the refrigerator. The artwork by artist Hae-sun Jwa illuminates those who endure today to survive - perhaps us. The canvas, built layer upon layer with brushstrokes of charcoal and oriental ink powder, emitting a vitality, feels very damp. What's alive is flexible, while what's lifeless is rigid. The grotesquely distorted bodies, therefore, feel more like struggles for survival rather than attempts to perish.
