Hong Lee Hyun-Sook

How far can our imagination and human gaze reach toward non-human entities? HongLee hyeonsook overcomes the dualistic logic of modernity, which sets humans against non-humans, and explores the possibility of equal communication with non-human beings. In Lion Pose (2017), the artist attempts to transcend human limitations by mimicking the behavior and sounds of a lion with all her might, striving to become the lion itself. On the other hand, What You Are Touching Now (2021) depicts the Seunggasa Buddha carving on Mount Bukhan, which is so distant and enormous that it is nearly impossible to capture in one glance. Rather than using her hands, the artist uses a camera to draw this massive figure through tactile vision and auditory imagination, allowing the viewer to experience contact with something fundamentally unreachable. The moment when the artist strains to become a lion, eyes bulging in the effort, and the moment when she touches the Buddha carving with her voice, are moments where the transformation of our senses may be the key to connecting with non-human entities.
