Hwang Ji-young

There is a photograph capturing the landscape of an ordinary street, somewhere around Dongdaemun District, near Cheongnyangni Station. This is the 0327 (2021) series by Hwang Jiyoung. However, these photographs are all virtual landscapes that have undergone compositing, transformation, and adjustment. Upon closer inspection, in 0327-1 (2021), the exterior wall of the building behind the central structure is an extension of the green floor surface, and in 0321-4 (2021), the fences are created through a copy-paste technique. The world drawn inside me, perceived by my sensory organs, can never be complete. Yet, we often mistake it for something flawless and whole. The process of finding the subtly manipulated parts in the photograph brings to mind the process of uncovering the errors in our perception.
