Kim Taedong

Kim Taedong explores the city as a site of discovery, collecting images while investigating the new forms of temporality generated through photography. Grounded in historical and social contexts, his photographic practice has developed through diverse experiments that move between day and night, documentary and artistic exploration, revealing the layered accumulations of time embedded beneath everyday landscapes.

The PLANETES series is a body of photographs created using a camera equipped with an equatorial mount, a device that rotates in alignment with the movement of the stars. As the camera follows the celestial trajectory, everything on the ground—war memorials, decommissioned weapons, village landscapes—becomes blurred according to the stars’ movement. Within a single frame, sharply fixed stars collide with the trembling traces of history. The time of human civilization is unsettled before the vast timescale of the cosmos, and photography quietly reveals this transience with patience and duration. Even with the awareness of such impermanence, the night sky, seen from the cool earth below, remains profoundly beautiful.
