Sikyung Sung

Sikyung Sung explores painting in the space between spontaneous gesture and underlying intention. Viewing the canvas as an empty field where nothing has yet been determined, he is interested in the abstract movements and traces left behind by the brush itself. Through the materiality of oil painting, he seeks to capture a sense of immediacy that can exist only in the very moment of painting.

Standing Note emerged from treating the large canvas that occupied the widest wall of the artist’s studio as if it were a notebook. Fragmentary and spontaneous gestures gradually accumulated and unfolded until they formed a single painting.

Blue Decoration and Blue Speed began with a simple and abstract impulse: “I want to paint a blue painting.” As he worked with blue pigment, ideas of ornament and speed naturally surfaced and spread across the canvas. Even at the moment of completion, the paintings remain open. They are traces of an enduring desire to continue the act of painting, while refusing to settle into a single, fixed meaning.
